There are so many freebies out there in the SLP universe - the key is to make sure we're downloading the freebies that we will actually print and use in therapy instead of just filling up our Google Drives. That's my goal with this section of the site. I want to direct you toward freebies that you will actually use - and I believe this is one of those! This is the Articulation Self-Rating Scale from Shannon at Speechy Musings.

This tool allows you to teach your clients to self-reflect their sound productions and you would be surprised at what an impact this makes during therapy! Typically we provide feedback to our clients, but we need to be sure that they understand what made that production "good" and why this one "needs more work." This visual includes numbers, colors, and faces to help your clients understand the difference between a poor production and a great one!

My most memorable use of this tool was with a 9 year old client with CAS who had been in speech and language therapy since he was 3 - so he was what I call "therapy-trained." He already knows all the prompts, all the cues, and that his production was poor if you said "say that word one more time for me." But he did understand what a good sound even sounded like. I provided this visual and he rated every single production and his ratings and mine did not always agree. Sometimes he rated himself better than I did and I was able to teach him what he needed to do to make it a 5 instead of a 3. There were also times he gave himself a 2 and I gave him a 5 and he tried to replicate the production so that he could "remember what a five feels like."
This is resource is one you should immediately print, laminate, and place with your articulation resources to have during any artic session with your kids that are old enough to reflect on their sounds.
You can find this freebie at Speechy Musings site after you sign up for her email list. Then, you will have access to her entire freebie library!
